The other day, it was pretty hot to say the least. So, I opted for this sheer crop top that I paired with a black strapless bra. I also added this flowy, cotton maxi skirt to give my legs some semblance of breathing room. Because it hangs a little long on me (and because I wanted to add a little interest), I tied the hem of the skirt into a low-hanging knot, something I often do. I threw on my trusted minimalistic sandals and called it a day. Unfortunately, I could no longer find the sandals online, so I linked a similar pair with an added metallic detail instead.

Once I get a fairly nice camera, I plan on taking a few shots of my OOTDs to bring you even more What I Wore posts. If there's anything specific you would like to see, let me know!

Tips & Tricks Tuesday | DIY Fashion Lifesavers

I ran into this article on Mashable a couple weeks ago listing different fashion tricks that men can use but honestly, all I read was a billion things that women can do as well. Here a few amazing DIY tips that you can use to make your fashion life a whole lot easier!

• In a rush and your shirt is super wrinkled? Toss it in the dryer with an ice cube! It will create steam to lessen the creases.
• Clean your leather shoes with olive oil for a natural sheen instead of a high gloss shine.
• If you can get over the sanitation factor, put your smelly shoes in the freezer overnight to eliminate the odor. I suggest several layers of plastic bags for this one!
• Sharpen your razor with an old pair of jeans. Dull razors are the number one cause of nicks and razor bumps so a sharp razor is key. I've actually done this trick myself and it works like a charm!
• You can also use razors to remove fuzz off of old sweaters. This doesn't work on all fabrics so if you're not sure how your sweater will respond, test a small, hidden section first to avoid ruining one of your favorite cardigans.

Typically I pull my tips and tricks from my own personal experiences, but when I read this article I knew it was too good not to pass along. Hope these help!

Oscars 2014 Best, Dressed

So you guys lucked up with only getting a "Top 5" out of me for the Golden Globes this year. However, choosing only five looks from last night's Oscars seemed nearly impossible...so I chose 10. Enjoy!

10. Amy Adams in Gucci Premiere | Peplum seemed to be a huge trend last night and I can see why. It's wildly flattering and on Adams, it was stunning. The navy color she chose also highlighted her hair and eye colors. 

9. Meryl Streep in Lanvin | This should come as no surprise. After all she's the queen; she has to look like royalty. She definitely didn't disappoint in this black and white draped number. 

8. Lady Gaga in Atelier Versace | I actually didn't even see this gown on Gaga until this morning as I was compiling this list. She looks fabulous and her natural styling of late is really doing it for me. Thumbs up!

7. Camila Alves McConaughey in Gabriela Cadena | I love her. I know nothing about her but she seems like a wonderful wife and mother, all while being absolutely flawless. Her skin tone against this powder pink was perfect. Did I mention I love her? Because I do.

6. Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen | If Meryl Streep is queen then I think it's officially safe to say that Bullock is setting herself up to be next in succession. Last night she dazzled. Every hair in place, makeup applied to perfection, and can we talk about the fit of this gown? Lovely. 

5. Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture | Swoon. Lawrence carries herself like the leading lady she truly is. Her styling is always age-appropriate (she's only 23!), fun, edgy, but always elegant. It almost makes you forget about what a lovable, goofball she really is. 

4. Anne Hathaway in Gucci | Another Gucci number to add to the list, but this one is strikingly different from Adams'. Hathaway has done a similar neckline before and it really works on her. The jewels made the gown both edgy and classy, something that's very tricky but Hathaway seemed to pull it off with ease.

3. Kerry Washington in Jason Wu | Washington is just glowing isn't she? At each awards show this season she has tastefully, and proudly, shown off her baby bump. Last night was no exception and she looked fabulous chowing down on the pizza that Ellen DeGeneres bought for the audience!

2. Angelina Jolie in Elie Saab Haute Couture | Jolie is usually stunning but something about her last night just seemed even more incredible. Metallic was another trend on the Oscars red carpet and Jolie carried it with effortless grace. Well done. 

1. Lupita Nyong'o in Prada | Nyong'o was the belle of the ball; in fact she received several comparisons on social media to Cinderella. She also shared in an interview before the show that she had a hand in designing the gown which was inspired by champagne bubbles. Nyong'o is a solidified It Girl after winning Best Supporting Actress last night, but do I smell a design collaboration down the line? I sure hope so!

Why Won't Winter End?

Let me start off by saying this is going to be more of a rant than an actual fashion post. However, what I'm ranting about is completely relevant. I don't understand why winter just won't end. I don't know how to dress in the cold. I simply go into survivor mode. I throw on my Docs and a thick scarf and call it a day...which is honestly starting to make me sad.

I could come up with some creative looks if it were just cold. But I'm currently in Philadelphia and we just got over a foot of snow a couple days ago. How can you be cute and winter ready?! You can't. Well maybe you can but I haven't been able to figure it out.

I dread friends asking me to go out too. I mean, party dresses and thick tights don't mix. Plus, I wouldn't be caught dead going out at night without anything on my legs like some of these girls. I really don't know how they do it.

Point is, it needs to warm up soon, the snow needs to melt, and the sun needs to come out. I'm running out of ideas...and leggings to go under my jeans.

Golden Globes 2014 Best, Dressed

You all should consider yourselves very lucky today. Why? Well my laptop charger broke, which means I am writing this post from my phone. If my laptop was accessible, just know that I would have been rambling about each and every look because they truly took my breath away this year. Instead, a picture and caption will have to do. 

5. Olivia Wilde I love this simply because I love when an expecting mother shows off her baby bump with pride. She chose an attention-grabbing color, silhouette, and fabric and she couldn't look more stunning. 

4. Margot Robbie Oh my gosh. I fell in love with her after seeing The Wolf of Wall Street and her look just made me fall even harder. Simple, elegant, and effortless. Seriously, what's not to love? 

3. Emma Roberts Speaking of simple and elegant can we please take a moment to acknowledge the budding fashion phenom that Roberts is becoming? What makes the dress is the styling. The hair and jewelry allow the dress (and it's stunning neckline) to truly shine. 

2. Lupita Nyong'o Honestly I'm surprising myself by not making this look number one. I don't think I have to say much to convince you that this was a show-stopper, especially for a new comer. The color suited her complexion perfectly and she looked absolutely radiant. I'm trying so hard not to gush about this woman but I can't help it! She's perfection. Without a doubt this woman will completely alter this country's perception of beauty. It's about time. 

1. Emma Watson Had this been an ordinary dress, it would have been number two for me. But, it was a whole other story when she turned around. 

Watson's "fake out" won the hearts of fashion critics everywhere. It's ingenious really: a glamourous, red carpet appropriate look that's (get this) comfortable! Most likely the envy of every woman there, this look easily takes the crown.

Summer to Fall Transitional Pieces

Don't hang up your summer clothes just yet because I have a few simple ways to make your favorite pieces stretch into the colder months. For my fellow college students, we can't always afford to buy a whole new wardrobe every time the seasons change. All that means is we get to be a little more creative!

• Sarong into head wrap/turban | Transform your favorite beach cover up into a fashionable way to stay warm. There are tons of tutorials on YouTube to make fabulous, and easy, head wraps so don't be afraid to try your hand at this trend.
• Crop tops over maxi dresses | This kills two birds with one stone. Both items were wildly popular this summer and will be just as popular if layered together. This style provides warmth and an unique silhouette. Add a thick scarf and some boots and you're ready to go.
• Tank tops and outerwear | One article I never retire during the fall (to the disdain of my mother) is a good tank top. While the trend of pairing them over long sleeve shirts may be long gone with snap bracelets and butterfly clips, there are other ways to stay warm. Layer them with chunky sweaters, leather jackets, or military jackets to stay in style and out of the nurse's office. 

While many may be storing away their summer essentials, mine are still hanging in my closet. Just because the weather is changing, doesn't mean you have to put your favorite pieces away until next year. Working with your summer articles forces you to be more creative with your outfits and is a really fun challenge.

A Conversation With Dom Streater - Project Runway Season 12 Winner

This week I had the extreme pleasure of speaking with Dom Streater, Project Runway's most recent winner. Unfortunately I wasn't able to record the conversation verbatim, but I excitedly took a billion and one notes. She had so much to share and now, I'm sharing it with you. So let's jump right in!

Jordan Cathleen: How was designing a collection different from the previous challenges?

Dom Streater: It was a lot of pressure to be able to tell my story right. It was definitely the ultimate challenge. Of course a lot more stress than usual because it's had to create a 12 piece collection in just six weeks!

JC: I can only imagine! I read that your favorite piece from the finale collection was the long sleeve dress with the cowl back. Is there a least favorite?
DS: I wouldn't say there was a least favorite piece. I made a lot of garments and went to a very selective process to narrow it down to everything that you saw in the collection. I honestly love every piece that I sent out.

JC: You touched on it a bit, but in more detail can you describe your design process?
DS: It all starts with inspiration. I usually have a good feeling of what will be "in" the next season. Also, I write a lot! I have just tons of descriptive words scribbled on my paper. After that I get into the sketching a developing a color palette and silhouettes. Then comes the prints. I can properly design a print if I don't know what silhouette I'm working with. It has to be proportionate. Then I get to design the print in photoshop and have it sent out to be made into a textile. Then I can get to work.

JC: Wow. I always knew it took a lot of work, but I never stopped to think about how much work goes into it.
DS: (Laughs) Yeah, it can be a bit much.

JC: (Laughs) I can see that! So how has Philadelphia influenced you as a designer?
DS: It influences the type of woman I design for. Everyone is always on the go, hopping on and off the subway. I design clothes that are made to be worn in the city, from day to night. My clothes are for people with an active lifestyle. Movement is my main thought when I design. I ask myself, "Will it work?" If it's not something I could wear in the city, I don't do it.

JC: So you focus on functionality?
DS: Exactly!

JC: Being a city girl myself I can appreciate that. So Philadelphia may not be a fashion capital like New York, but in your opinion is the fashion scene here growing?
DS: Definitely! I noticed this while I was in school. Over the past few years, interest in fashion has blown up. It's becoming a regular part of our lives.

JC: The majority of my readers are women my age (20, not much younger than yourself). Explain where all of your confidence comes from.
DS: Well, I'm just a naturally talkative person so it's easy for me to jump right into things. Besides, it's required as a designer. You have to have tenacity in this industry. Plus I've never been the type of person concerned with other people's opinions. The only thing that should matter is your own.

JC: Was there ever any point during the competition where you doubted yourself/your ability to win?
DS: No, not really. There were definitely moments when I was stressed, tired, and exhausted! I went in saying, "I want to win." I wouldn't do it if I didn't think I could win. That just seems like a waste to me.

JC: I really like that perspective and you're right, it does seem like a waste of time if you aren't going into something with that mentality.
DS: Exactly. It's like, so what are you doing then?

JC: Alright, I'm sure you have a ton of favorite pieces that you made during the competition, but what is your favorite garment previous to Project Runway?
DS: Previous? Oh wow.... Well there's this chiffon dress I made that used two textiles that I hand-pieced together. That was the first time I realized I could mix textiles. It's funny because you can't really teach that. You're just born to have an eye for textile design; it's not really something that can be developed. That's actually still one of my favorite pieces.

JC: Favorite garment during the season?
DS: Definitely the avant garde challenge. It was perfectly made, both in construction and design! I absolutely love that look. I'm really glad that the judges saw the hard work that I put into it.

JC: Most fun challenge.
DS: (Laughs) The HP challenge!

JC: (Laughs) I figured you would say that. Most difficult challenge.
DS: The first challenge, definitely. It's like you watch the show and you know it's difficult, but you really have no idea. The pace is insane and it was definitely a shock. The first and second challenges I really struggled with time management.

JC: How long is the season in real time?
DS: Six weeks!

JC: Oh wow, that's insane! So what experience has developed you most as a designer? (Your education, specific life event, etc.)
DS: Um well there was no one moment. I remember in high school when I was starting to apply for college, I was going to study marine biology. I was talking to my counselor about what I liked to do and fashion came up. I made the decision to pursue fashion and never looked back.

JC: How did you seem to stay above the drama this season?
DS: This was a huge opportunity. I had been looking for a job in the industry for months after graduation. I knew this was my one chance at fashion so I wanted to remain professional throughout the competition.

JC: Is there any one person who helped you the most on the show?
DS: Helen. She was my closest friend. We bonded, confided, and helped each other. We can't talk to family, no phone, no computer. We're completely shut off. She was my shoulder to lean on and I was her shoulder to lean on.

JC: You and your model also seemed to have a pretty good relationship. Did she help you as well?
DS: I love my model! She was the perfect model: perfect personality, beautiful. Plus she was intuitive to the judges' point of view. You know when they get a closer look at the clothes? She would come to me with extra feedback from the judges. Plus she was so beautiful so I wanted to design feminine, elegant clothes to match her personality.

JC: You are such a motivated, passionate person. What message can you give to my readers on pursuing their own dreams?
DS: To not give up. It's very easy to get discouraged. It had been three years since graduation and I still didn't have a job in my field. I had to work at an animal care center and waitress. You have to stick to your guns. Now, I can wake up doing what I love. Besides, it's supposed to be hard; you're supposed to struggle. It makes you that much stronger.

Fashion Fridays Are Now F+

Why the name change you ask? I was starting to feel that having two series with alliteration titles was a bit corny. Regardless, I'll still keep Tips & Tricks Tuesday and F+ will still be posted on Fridays.

The meaning behind F+ is simple. It stands for Fashion Plus. Everyone that I choose to feature in the series has amazing fashion sense, plus a little something extra. I like finding people who usher in new ideas as opposed to simply replicating old ones. F+ is also a little play on words because all of the people I feature have made my fashion Dean's List.

Fashion Fridays | Describe Your Style

Describe your style. Probably the hardest question ever. I've been told I dress pretty girly though. I personally think I probably look more professional than most because I will throw a blazer on top of literally any outfit. I don't care.

What is your favorite accessory? My white tortoise and rose gold Fossil watch.

Have you gone through any personal and/or interesting fashion eras? (ex: have you ever only worn a certain color like black, or only wore ‘punk’ clothing?) I mean wasn't middle school interesting for everyone?

Do you collect shoes or hats, or anything like that? I used to collect scarves...heavy. I recently got another one while in Puerto Rico so maybe I'll start back up.

Do you feel comfortable in the clothes you wear, if not what would you change? Why would you wear clothes you aren't comfortable in? Now if there's an outfit that I put together and I'm not really feeling it, I'll change the whole thing. If I don't have time to I feel squirmy all day.

Describe your body shape: Curvy, baby.

Do you wear clothes to emphasize/accentuate/change your body shape in any way? I would say so... and so would my mom.

What stores do you shop at, usually? I'm typically an H&M (praise everything that they finally have online shopping), Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, American Apparel, thrift shop kind of girl. I have never sounded more basic in my life.

Would you ever go thrift shopping for clothes? Yup.

What do you wear to the beach? Well over top of my swimsuit I really like lace dress cover ups and beach pants, both harem and wide leg.

Does your style evolve over time or does it change drastically? I think it evolves but occasionally I will have random outfit inspirations that are outside of my typical style.

Who is your fashion inspiration? I don't think there is a particular person that I draw from for inspiration. I come up with just as many outfit ideas while online window shopping as I do thumbing through a fashion magazine.

Is there a time of year when you think you are the least fashionable, like in the Winter? I think I'm least fashionable in the summer because big I'm a fan of layers which isn't the best option in July.

Do you ever dress formally? What do you wear for formal occasions? I do although I don't get the chance to very often. I've been waiting for the chance to wear an all white outfit next. 

Have you ever had an awkward fashion stage? When my mother dressed me. We're talking mom jeans (with eventual patches in the knees), knee high white socks with clunky Mary Jane's (light years ahead of my time), and skorts. Funny, I just described Tumblr.*

How has your size impacted your style, both in the past and present? Well there are certain tops and dresses that I have to look right over if they aren't cut in a way that will accommodate my bra. I have a pretty large chest so going bra less, or even strapless sometimes, simply isn't an option for me. Oh how I long for a spaghetti strap backless silk tank.

Favorite skirt length. Currently midi. It's fun, different, and makes modest sexy as hell.

Favorite sleeve length. Um I don't have one. Do normal people have one?

My Vacation Beauty Essentials

In about two weeks time I will be relaxing on the beaches of sunny San Juan. But before that happens, there are a few fashion and beauty essentials that I need to make sure I have with me.

FASHION

• Cover up | This one should be the most self-explanatory. After leaving the beach or the pool and you don't want to stop and change, a cover up is a life saver. Luckily there are a ton of cute options from a sarong to a maxi dress or even a wide leg pair of beach pants. I still haven't decided which one I want...so I probably try to get them all.
• Hat | Since I typically wear my hair in fro form lately, I haven't gotten a chance to wear a hat yet this summer. But, hats are extremely important and keep your face shielded from the sun's harsh rays during the day. I have a classic wide-brimmed beach hat and a fedora that will definitely be taking the trip with me.
• Sandals | Also obvious. However, for me, it's definitely time to invest in a new pair. While the pair I currently own aren't extremely old, it would still be embarrassing if for some reason they decided to give out on me mid- late night stroll.
• Swimsuit | I just want a new one, okay?!

BEAUTY

• Sunscreen | The biggest beauty must for vacationing. Because you will be in the sun a lot more, protecting your skin has to become a priority in your skincare routine while you're away.
• Fragrance mist | Again, during vacation you're constantly moving from one activity to the next. Would you really like to smell like a long day on the beach during lunch? Yeah, neither would I.
• Leave-in conditioner (with SPF) | If your skin can be damaged from sun exposure, what's stopping your hair from being at risk too? This is a great way to keep your hair from being stripped of all its moisture while in the pool or ocean and protect it from UV rays. 
• Waterproof...everything | If you can't bear to have a bare face, then be minimal with your makeup. Wearing heavy makeup to the pool or beach can look just as silly as wearing makeup to the gym, so be careful. Instead of foundation, opt for a BB cream with SPF. Also, make sure your eyeliners and mascara are waterproof to avoid looking like someone just broke up with you in the middle of the ocean.

Fashion Fridays | District Style

There is absolutely nothing better than the fashion in Washington, DC*. However, I didn't realize how much I missed DC fashion until last night. I attended a party on Connecticut Avenue and it was honestly a breath of fresh air. Everyone's style was so unique and every outfit had a different vibe from the next. I suppose absence really does make the heart grow fonder.

What is it that makes DC fashion so distinct from other cities? We shop at the same places and find, generally, the same things at the thrift stores, so how is it that we look so much different? I think it's in the way that we interpret the clothes. It's how we accessorize. It's how we choose to style our hair, our makeup. It's the combinations we come up with that make us stand out.

Now that I'm living in the city again for the summer, this would be the perfect time to explore this even more. This summer should be a fabulous adventure.

*Prince George's County is also included. Let us not get our panties in a bunch.

Staples You Should Keep at Your Boyfriend's House

Whenever you decide to crash at your boyfriend's (or girlfriend's!) place, there are certain things that are absolutely essential to have with you. Trust me, I know all too well at this point through trial and error. Why make mistakes when you can just learn from mine?

Fashion
You want to bring over items that can be thrown on quickly. Chances are your boo doesn't possess your awesome organizational skills so at the risk of being late for class looking around for things, make sure you have pieces you can pull on and go. Also, try to avoid items that require an iron. On the off chance that he actually possesses one, it's always easier to not have to rely on it. Great pieces include:

• Leggings
• Sweatshirts
• Slip-on flats
• Cardigan (or other wrinkle-free outerwear of choice)
• Comfy jeans

Beauty

To me, this category is much more important than the clothes you bring over. I mean if comes to it you can always throw on a pair of jeans and one of his T-shirts, but you definitely can't use his deodorant! So, anything that is gender specific in terms of fragrance, make sure you account for that. Also, if you have a specific skincare or hair regimen, don't break it! As difficult as it can be sometimes to stick with it, your skin and hair will thank you. Your boyfriend's medicine cabinet may not, however. Here are a few things I always remember:

• Face cleanser
• Shower gel
• Body cream
• Deodorant
• Contacts (kind of obvious)
• Hair products (account for anything you use while you sleep)

You may look like a bag lady making your way to his place but hey, at least you'll be a well-prepared bag lady!

Fashion Fridays | Cosmopolitan

So I know I just got over a cold but now I can't help but find myself under the weather again, with spring fever. There are so many trends that I'm itching to take out of my closet or invest in this season.

Chiffon -- This trend is so lightweight it's perfect for transitioning from winter to spring depending on what you layer with it. It's also an extremely versatile look that can be dressed up for a party or dressed down for a casual date.

Neon + Skater Skirts -- This, conveniently, shows off two trends in one. Bright neons are sure to wake up anyone up from their winter funk and skater skirts are showing no sign of slowing down. I guess I'm not the only girl that believes there's more options out there besides super tight and super short. Bodycon isn't going anywhere, but at least this spring I won't have to see it everywhere either.
